1 in 6 wouldn’t report a workplace hazard

A new survey published by Accident Advice Helpline, has revealed that hazards aren’t always being reported in the workplace. 1 in 6 said they would not report identified workplace hazards despite 25% admitting that they or someone they worked with had been harmed at work.

When asked why, the respondents gave the following answers;

  • 29% said they didn’t have the time
  • 24% felt the hazard didn’t affect them
  • 23% said it wasn’t their responsibility
  • 23% didn’t know who to report a hazard to
  • 13.2% worried about getting in trouble
  • 7.5% were told not to report an issue

Calgary Urban Project Society

Not-for-profit organisation, CUPS, use StaySafe on Cat® rugged smartphones for a robust, reliable way to protect their community workers.

Calgary Urban Project Society (CUPS) are a non-profit organisation working to support individuals and families in overcoming the challenges of poverty. CUPS provide the resources needed for individuals to get their lives on track and achieve their full potential through three main services; housing, education and health care.

CUPS were previously using a different service to monitor staff safety but felt that it wasn’t enough to carry out their duty of care. While it provided a rough idea of where staff were located, it was not enough to locate them quickly in an emergency. They also found that it wasn’t suitable for all of their lone workers and so only a couple of teams were able to use it. Read more

Signposts Charity’s staff use StaySafe are rarely in the office

Homeless charity Signposts, who provide temporary accommodation and support services to 16-65 year olds in Luton and Dunstable, have launched the StaySafe smartphone app and surrounding cloud-based monitoring service to protect their lone workers.

The staff at Signposts offer 24-hour support to vulnerable and sometimes high-risk individuals so the charity felt they needed a way to accurately monitor and protect their employees while they work in the community. After a review of the market, Signposts decided to roll out StaySafe across the business. Read more

Employees in the housing sector can be extremely vulnerable as they are required to visit building sites and empty properties, carry out maintenance work and meet with buyers and tenants, often by themselves. Lone workers can be an easy target for verbal or physical abuse or have an accident and not be able to call for help.

In a study commissioned in 2012 by Inside Housing1 of more than 220 councils, arm’s length management organisations and housing associations in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales it was found that 84% of survey respondents had been verbally assaulted, 8% had had a weapon used against them and 1% had been sexually assaulted.

TransGas provide transportation and storage services to natural gas producers and consumers across Saskatchewan. With a network of 14,000 kilometres of natural gas pipelines, their operators spend much of their working day travelling to and between sites and may spend large portions of their day working alone.
